Jesus and Politics

If Jesus is Lord of our lives then we should seek to apply that Lordship to our participation in politics and political issues. We all have many current issues to apply Jesus’

Lordship to: Abortion, immigration, racism, social justice, etc.

We are to act in a loving and responsible way in light of our vertical relationship to God and our relationships with others. Scripture gives us two major points that shine

through:

HOW SHOULD WE VIEW GOVERNMENT?

“Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or shouldn’t we?”  But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why are you trying to trap Me?” He asked. “Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” They brought the coin, and He asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”  “Caesar’s,” they replied.  Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.  And they were amazed at Him.”
Mark 12:14b-17 (NIV)

Jesus faced a hostile audience eager to trap HIm with a question that seemed to have no good answer. The first part of the answer is that the money comes from the

system the government has set up and so we should pay the tribute that the government demands. But Jesus then went further: “And to God what is God’s”.

Jesus obviously says in this passage that there is a place for the government. The government has a rightful task and function it should accomplish. But when God is put

into the picture Caesar’s power and might is immediately put into proper perspective.  Caesar will follow the same path as others before. Earthly kingdoms will decay, erode

and eventually crumble.

The government exists because God establishes it. The government should never be confused with the authority behind all authorities. Jesus is Lord and Caesar is not.

All Real Authority Comes From God

There is ultimately only One worthy to rule.  That One is Jesus Christ. All real authority comes from God. We can become very excited about a President of the people like

Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, but we should be much more focused on the reality of the Kingship of Jesus Christ.

I have seen that politics comes and goes, but what will always remain is Jesus Christ is King. That is what we should primarily be focused upon.
