Spiritual Identity

WHO ARE YOU?

Well, I am a brother, uncle, father, grandfather, cousin, husband, friend, pastor, and the list goes on.

Today, we can swab the inside of our cheek and discover our DNA, our ancestry, and what regions of the world our DNA came from.

But who are we? We are still confused. I can even know my personality type (Lion/Beaver/Otter, Orange, DCI, etc.), yet in many ways we are still confused about the question: Who Am I?

Let’s start at the beginning.

We are made in the image of God.

“Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in Our image, in Our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:26-27(NIV)

This is our spiritual identity, and it has everything to do with everything.

Understanding who God created us to be, impacts every single area of our life.

RESTORING THE RELATIONSHIP

Confusion about identity means we start by looking at misalignment toward God on our end of things.

We have to first believe God is who He says He is, before we can believe we are who He says we are.

The value of something said to us usually is found in the relationship with the person saying it.

For example, if a random person approached me at a grocery store and complimented me, it would be encouraging, but it wouldn’t have a huge impact. But if a family member or friend expressed appreciation to me that would have much greater impact.

With God, the One who made us – our identity is clear.

“Thank You for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in Your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” Psalm 139:14-16 (NLT)

We are made in God’s image.

ALIGN OUR IDENTITY

We can try to find identity in profit, social media followers, power, and things, and the list goes on. But our true identity is not affected by what we do or what we have.

If we search for identity in any of these places, we will come up empty every time.

We were made to be sons and daughters of God. God is all about relationships not rules. As we realign ourselves with who God says we are, we have meaning and purpose.

To live in a place of knowing we are fully seen, completely known, and perfectly loved, our lives become catalysts for advancing the kingdom of God, and we know who we really are.
