Part 3: Come to the Table

PARABLES OF JESUS

PART 3

Luke 14:15-26

WHY “GOOD” PEOPLE MISS THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

1. SOME MISS THE KINGDOM OF GOD BECAUSE THEY DON’T REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INVITATION.

But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’ Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’”  Luke 14:18-20 (NIV)

  • How important is an invitation from God?

2. SOME MISS THE KINGDOM OF GOD BECAUSE THEY FEEL UNWORTHY.

“The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’ ‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’  Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.” Luke 14:21-23 (NIV)

“We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.” Isaiah 64:6 (NLT)

God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV)

Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12 (NIV)

3. SOME MISS THE KINGDOM OF GOD BECAUSE THEY REFUSE TO ADMIT THAT THEY ARE UNWORTHY.

“I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.” Luke 14:24 (NIV)

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”  Matthew 5:3 (NIV)

“Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them He said: ‘If anyone comes to Me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.’” Luke 14:25-27 (NIV)
