Part 4: Rehoboam's Lost Leadership
WHEN THE GOOD GO BAD
PART 4
1 Kings 12
THE BACKSTORY:
King Rehoboam 1 Kings 12:1-24
A curse: 1 Kings 11:1-4
1. DID REHOBOAM HAVE A CHOICE?
Some things don’t have an easy answer.
“The Lord our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that He has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions.” Deuteronomy 29:29 (NLT)
“‘My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,’ says the Lord. ‘And My ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts higher than your thoughts.’” Isaiah 55:8-9 (NLT)
God is sovereign - but what we do does really matter.
“O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand. If I announce that a certain nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down, and destroyed, but then that nation renounces its evil ways, I will not destroy it as I had planned.” Jeremiah 18:6-8 (NLT)
2. REHOBOAM’S TWO BAD DECISIONS.
Listening to bad advice.
Am I asking the right people?
“Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others.” Proverbs 12:15 (NLT)
Am I seeking advice or someone who agrees with me?
“Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions.” Proverbs 18:2 (NLT)
Leading by fear and intimidation.
“Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will earn a good reputation.” Proverbs 3:3-4 (NLT)
Good leaders always put the needs of others first.
Leaders who last are dependable and consistent.
“...the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28 (NIV)
