Part 1: Sent Out With Love

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

PART 1

John 13:1-5

1.  WHAT DO WE LEARN ABOUT JESUS?

“So He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around His waist. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.” John 13:4-5 (NIV)

2.  WHAT DO WE LEARN ABOUT JESUS’ MOTIVATION

“It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.” John 13:1 (NIV)

  • Jesus’ focus was unconditional love.

  • Jesus loves us in spite of our unworthiness.

“The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.” John 13:2 (NIV)

“The Lord did not set His heart on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other nations, for you were the smallest of all nations! Rather, it was simply that the Lord loves you...” Deuteronomy 7:7-8a (NLT)

  • Jesus doesn’t love you because you’re great—He loves you because He's great.

3.  WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR HOW YOU LIVE?

“You call Me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” John 13:13-15 (NIV)

  • You should be respectful, kind, and loving to people who oppose you.

  • Follow Jesus’ model of greatness.

“A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.” Luke 22:24 (NIV)

“For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as One who serves.” Luke 22:27 (NIV)
