Part 3: Follow The Leader

MASTERCLASS: THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

PART 2

Matthew 6:1-21

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. ‘You are the light of the world…”

Matthew 5:13-14a (NIV)

1. MY HEART ALWAYS FOLLOWS MY TREASURE.

“Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 6:1 (NLT)

“When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get. But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”

Matthew 6:2-4 (NLT)

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.”

Matthew 6:19 (NLT)

“Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.”

Matthew 6:20 (NLT)

“Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”

Matthew 6:21 (NLT)

2. STEP UP TO GENEROUS LIVING. TWO KEY PRINCIPLES:

(1) When we trust Jesus, we’ll manage His money. When we distrust Jesus, we act like owners of our money.

(2) Being rich toward God means trusting His promises more than my impulses.

“Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.’ And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.”

2 Corinthians 9:6-8 (NLT)

“For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, He will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God.”

2 Corinthians 9:10-11 (NLT)

  • Premeditated generosity - Decide ahead of time how much to give and where you will be generous before your circumstances talk you out of it.
