Part 4: Teach Us To Pray

MASTERCLASS: THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

PART 4

Matthew 6:9-13

  • Prayer - Having a conversation with God. (talking + listening)

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world…” Matthew 5:13-14a (NIV)

“Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.” Matthew 6:8 (NIV)

“This, then, is how you should pray:

‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’” Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV)

1. SPEND TIME DAILY WITH YOUR FATHER.

“This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven…” Matthew 6:9a (NIV)

“Some people have had bad fathers and say they can’t relate to God as a Father, but we are not to measure our heavenly Father by the standard of our earthly ones. Rather, we are to measure our earthly fathers by the standard of our Father in heaven - who is perfect. He is the ultimate definition of what a father is.”  Dr. Tony Evans

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You!” Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)

2. SEEK GOD’S GLORY ABOVE ALL ELSE.

“...Hallowed be Your name.” Matthew 6:9b (NIV)

3. GIVE GOD YOUR LIFE.

“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10 (NIV)

4. BELIEVE TODAY YOU HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR TODAY.

“Give us today our daily bread.”  Matthew 6:11 (NIV)

  • Father, thank You for providing for me today by _______.

5. DEPEND ON GOD TO BE FORGIVEN AND TO  FORGIVE.

“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” Matthew 6:12 (NIV)

6. FIGHT AGAINST THE SCHEMES OF THE EVIL ONE.

“...Deliver us from evil.” Matthew 6:13b (NIV)

“This, then, is how you should pray:

‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’” Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV)

  • You don’t pray to get something - you pray to know someone.
