Part 1: Haggai: Never Enough

ONE HIT WONDERS

PART 1

“You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.”

Haggai 1:6 (ESV)

  • BIG IDEA: ISRAEL PUT THEMSELVES AHEAD OF GOD.

1. SACRIFICE MATTERS IN OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.

“You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the Lord of hosts. Because of My house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house.”

Haggai 1:9 (ESV)

2. WHEN WE ENGAGE IN GOD’S WORK, HE ENGAGES IN OUR LIVES.

“Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord. Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord, spoke to the people with the Lord's message, ‘I am with you, declares the Lord.’”

Haggai 1:12-13 (ESV)

  • OUR RESPONSE TO GOD DETERMINES HIS RESPONSE TO US.

3. GOD’S PROVISION, NOT OUR OUTPUT, DETERMINES THE OUTCOME.

“The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, declares the Lord of hosts. The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the Lord of hosts.”

Haggai 2:8-9 (ESV)

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.”

Psalm 127:1 (ESV)

“The ship is safest when it is in port. But that’s not what ships were made for.”

MY NEXT STEP TODAY IS:

  • Take an inventory of where your time is going in life and what is motivating your actions and make sure you are seeking first His Kingdom.

  • Prayerfully consider how your response to God is impacting God’s response to you.
