Part 2: Obadiah: Giving and Getting

ONE HIT WONDERS

PART 2

“The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’”

Obadiah 3 (ESV)

1. WE ARE ALWAYS PLANTING IN OUR LIVES.

“But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. For each will have to bear his own load. Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.”

Galatians 6:4-7 (ESV)

2. AS PLANTERS WE HAVE TWO BATTLES BEFORE US:

  • PRIDE OR HUMILITY.

“For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, ‘Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.’”

1 Corinthians 1:26-31 (ESV)

  • GREED OR GENEROSITY.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

Matthew 6:19-20 (ESV)

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:13 (ESV)

3. JESUS SETS THE EXAMPLE OF HUMILITY AND GENEROSITY.

“But we see Him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.”

Hebrews 2:9 (ESV)

“But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:8 (ESV)
