Part 2: The Command to Sing

PRACTICING THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

PART 2

Ephesians 5:18-21

Let the godly sing for joy to the Lord; it is fitting for the pure to praise Him. Praise the Lord with melodies on the lyre; make music for Him on the ten-stringed harp. Sing a new song of praise to Him; play skillfully on the harp, and sing with joy.” Psalm 33:1-3 (NLT)

1.  THE POWER OF MUSIC SUNG TO GOD: WHAT IT DOES.

“...Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:19b (NIV)

So write down the words of this song, and teach it to the people of Israel. Help them learn it, so it may serve as a witness for Me against them.” Deuteronomy 31:19 (NLT)

2.  THE GRACE OF MUSIC SUNG TO GOD: WHAT IT CAN DO.

“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:18-19 (NIV)

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” Colossians 3:16 (NIV)

3.  WHAT MUSIC SUNG TO GOD WILL DO IN THE FUTURE.

“You will live in joy and peace. The mountains and hills will burst into song, and the trees of the field will clap their hands!” Isaiah 55:12 (NLT)

“Let the heavens be glad, and the earth rejoice! Let the sea and everything in it shout His praise! Let the fields and their crops burst out with joy! Let the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for He is coming! He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with justice, and the nations with His truth.” Psalm 96:11-13 (NIV)

“I will declare Your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing Your praises.” Hebrews 2:12 (NIV)
