SINGING A NEW SONG FOR 2025

Hello church family,

I recently did research on what happens when we sing, and I found a list of things that are very interesting, that in every way, singing is all positive in a natural sense. It is a mood booster, it lowers our stress levels, it improves our memory, it increases our lung capacity, it helps us feel a sense of connection and the list goes on and on. But what does the Bible say about singing?

Psalms 96:1-3

“Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, His marvelous works among all the peoples!”

The Bible also encourages us to sing amongst our fellow believers and friends in the Church.

Psalm 22:22 ESV

“I will tell of your name to my brothers; In the midst of the congregation I will praise you.”

Verse 22 reminds me of a quote by the German martyr, Dietrich Bonhoeffer -

“It is the voice of the church that is heard in singing together. It is not I who sings, but the church. However, as a member of the church, I may share in its song.”

I pray that in this New Year, one of your resolutions would be to sing! Sing when you’re alone, sing with your friends, sing in the church. And my hope is that no matter what, you would sing a new song to the Lord.

Happy New Year!
