Part 2: Finding God

PSALMS OF SUMMER

PART 2

Psalms 42-43

HOW TO STAY SPIRITUALLY HYDRATED:

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” Psalm 42:1-2 (NIV)

1.  SEEK GOD DAILY.

“My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, ‘Where is your God?’ These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.” Psalm 42:3-4 (NIV)

  •  You need to filter what you consume.

“My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, ‘Where is your God?’” Psalm 42:10 (NIV)

  •  Not everything you drink will satisfy your thirst.

“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’” John 4:13-14 (NIV)

2.  DON’T DEPEND ON YOUR FEELINGS.

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.” Psalm 42:5 (NIV)

  • Your changing circumstances don’t change God’s character.

“Vindicate me, my God, and plead my cause against an unfaithful nation. Rescue me from those who are deceitful and wicked. You are God my stronghold. Why have you rejected me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?” Psalm 43:1-2 (NIV)

  • Trust God with your feelings.

“My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.” Psalm 42:6 (NIV)

3.  PRAISE GOD IN EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE.

“Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise Him again—my Savior and my God!” Psalm 43:5 (NLT)

  • God’s worthiness of praise is not increased or decreased by your circumstances.

“Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess His name.  And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Hebrews 13:15-16 (NIV)
